Festival Workshops

August 6th

Morning and Afternoon
In the morning, J'anna J'acqulyn will do an outdoor watercolour landscape painting class from 9 to 12, and Simon Copas will introduce you to the spontaneous pleasures of plein air oil painting from 9:30 to 12:30. From 1 to 4 in the afternoon, Shelley Mitchell offers a landscape workshop in oils.
Each workshop is only $25.00 per person - call ahead to register

Adult Art Classes

Soft Pastels
Instructor: Rae Smith
Rae Smith will cover a variety of materials and techniques that can be used when working in pastels. One of the beauties of pastel is its rich, glowing colour. Students shoud bring a set of soft pastels (best they can buy) and a coloured pastel paper pad. Rae will explain the history of pastels, offer demonstration and help students create their own painting.

Lively, Luminous Coloured Pencils
Instructor: Michelle Pasquin
Watersoluble drawing materials offer a "bridge" between the control of drawing and watercolour's fluid beauty. This medium offers an abundance of possibilities- neatly packaged within a highly pigmented point. Michelle will conduct demonstrations and present tips and techniques for watersoluble pencil effects while working with still life.

Creativity as a Tool
Instructor: Jennie Carton
These four sessions will explore the concepts that spur our imaginations and cause us to want to make art - better. We'll use a wide variety of materials, our own experience, a little logic, and a good design to enhance our own visual voices. Loosen up, have fun, and learn lots! Join Jennie for an exploration into the limitless world of mixed media.

Plein Air Oil Painting
Instructor: Simon Copas
An introductory course to plein air painting. Learn to look at the landscape and paint it with immediacy, noting basic colour and form, treating the experience as a meditation of appreciation.

Hand Painted Furniture
Instructor: Deborah Housser
Learn to revitalize an old piece of furniture or bring a new piece on which to paint a fun and lively design. Create a functional and unique piece of art for your home. Session one: prepare the piece by sanding and priming. Session two: layout your design, paint and finish.

Using Art to Enhance Your Home
Instructor: Gerrie Masters
Join Gerrie Masters of Home Staging & Décor Services, a company that provides clients with affordable and fresh solutions that create beauty, elegance and style in their homes. This workshop will focus on guidelines for the most effective way to frame and hang paintings and pictures. Also explored, the creation of works of art on a small budget and the use of collections as wall art.

Landscape Drawing and Watercolour Class
Instructor: Charlotte Marble
While drawing and painting outdoors, students will learn methods of deciding on subject matter as well as editing, and creating composition. Information on perspective, drawing techniques, colour theory and paint application will be shared and practiced. Students will work on sketch paper and watercolour paper.

Portrait Photography
Instructor: Link Nicoll
Portraiture is a dialogue between the artist and the subject and in this class students will explore the elements of this creative conversation. Participants will review the work of well-known portrait artists. Important practical aspects of taking portraits will be discussed and tested. How do you choose a location? What is the best way to light your subject? Most importantly, how do you get your subject to respond to the lens? Students are asked to bring their best portraits (if possible). Students should bring their own camera to every class session.

Let's Print
Instructor: Rosi Robinson
Explore the many different kinds of printing.....monoprinting, printing with found objects, printing with press print and making a simple collograph. You can print a picture, or print decorate cards. Personal imagery and improvisation will be encouraged to expand your possibilities and to get your creativity flowing.
