Create your own beautiful mosaic flowerpot. You will learn about the tools and materials required, application techniques, design, construction and grouting. All materials are included for the course but if you have any broken pottery pieces you want to incorporate into your design please feel free to bring them. Lynn has conducted a number of mosaic courses for the Chester Art Centre and has been creating her own pieces since 2002.

Getting to Know Your Digital Camera

This workshop provides a comprehensive introduction to the photographic process that will help you understand your digital camera’s sophisticated technology and put it to work for you, making images you can be proud of. This intensive one-day workshop combines classroom theory, hands-on camera practice, and an afternoon outing (weather permitting) to experiment with new techniques along the Chester waterfront. Take-home notes are provided for handy reference. Bring your digital camera (DSLR, Compact System or good quality Point-and-Shoot), lens(es), a fresh battery and memory card – and don’t forget the User Manual!

Nancy Dunaway, an eclectic artist from Arkansas, returns to the Centre to explore one of her favourite things – RUST! Nancy has spent the last couple of years refining printmaking with rust and is anxious to share this unique technique with you. You’ll create mono-prints with Rust using found rusty objects and apple cider vinegar on paper and fabric. Then you’ll use the work as beautiful abstract prints, a base for intuitive collage, and a lovely wanderer’s journal. Perfect for the beginner or the artist who wants to explore and inject new energy into his/her work.

Postcards of Nova Scotia

Working from photo sources (Heather will have lots) in this two-day workshop you will make small paintings – 8 x 10 – that capture the spirit of this place. You can also bring your own photos of places you love. The class will look at colour, perspective (the buildings) and composition. The focus is essentially on landscape but you will learn to address perspective, which is helpful in working with architecture.

Introduction to Memoir Writing

This workshop introduces the genre of memoir writing and consists of writing exercises that stimulate reflection and contemplation. It offers a creative and transformative way of revisiting and working with a chosen part of the past and telling a story. While process oriented, it will enable you to identify a meaningful area of focus to pursue and develop. The sharing of writing during the workshop is voluntary.

Mid-Summer Relief Printing

July 19, 20 & 21 9:30 am – 12:30 pm
July is the perfect time to start recording your holiday memories. Draw, carve, and then print your garden, flowers or boats of Chester and area. No experience needed! We provide all the materials, and you bring all the ideas. This ancient art form has been used in graphic design and book illustration for centuries. You will create at least three images, which you can turn into cards, framed works or gifts.
Cost: $100.00 plus $20.00 for materials.
Painted Canvas Mat Workshop
Instructor: Cherie MacLeod
August 21, 22 & 23 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Paint a piece of art for your floor! Class will consist of three afternoon sessions to complete a 28” x 34” mat. You will work with a floral theme adding some interesting twists and doodles. This is a fun and imaginative class for anyone, regardless of painting skills. Students will be provided with a primed canvas, and all materials. On Monday you will hem the prepared canvas and get to work creating the designs. Tuesday will be a full session of painting fun. Wednesday you will add some finishing touches and varnish the completed mats.

Beginners Oil Painting
Instructor: Shelley Mitchell
August 24 & 25 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
This class is a Beginners Oil Painting class and over the course of 2 days Shelley will cover basic colour mixing, mediums and general painting practice including a demo. The principles of value, colour and composition will be explored as you create a small floral or still life. Bring any materials you may have but Shelley will supply most of what you need.

Photoshop Crash Course
Instructor: Kas Stone

From the moment you first open Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, you are offered a dazzling array of tools and techniques for image enhancement. But the choices can seem overwhelming. This workshop cuts through the confusion and introduces you to an efficient, step-by-step workflow for editing your pictures to perfection. It is technically challenging but not impossible for beginners, and makes an excellent refresher for more experienced Photoshop users. It is presented on an HD monitor or you are welcome to bring your own laptop with any recent version of Photoshop or Elements, and some (RAW or JPEG) images to work on. Take-home notes are provided for handy reference.

From Underpainting to Colour
Instructor: Malcolm Callaway
October 5, 12, 19, 26, November 2 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm
This fall class will be all about colour – how is it made, and with what brush and canvas to use. Starting in grey tones you’ll build tonal understanding before getting to colour. There will be demos and Malcolm will work with you on your own projects. You’ll look at all aspects of composition, tonality, underpainting and presentation. “Your pet projects will not include kittens or grandchildren, dogs maybe.”

Winter Scenes Acrylic Painting

November 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm
You will work on winter scenes to create an acrylic painting as a gift for Christmas. You will begin each class with a quick speed painting to loosen you up and then begin the real work. Pat will do a demo painting during each class with instruction. It’s only paint – let’s have fun.
