DONALD HOUSTON CURLEY  1934–2009

Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Don spent the last 30 years of his life living and painting in Chester with his wife Trudi and sons Dijon and Rene. He was an avid member of the Chester Golf Club and the Chester Yacht Club. Most mornings he could be found having coffee with his friend, artist Jose Valverde at Julien’s Bakery.

As well as working full time as an artist, Don had been a teacher, lecturer, writer and musician, often saying that he enjoyed teaching as much as painting. His work, which he referred to as “objective realism” often tells the stories of man’s relationship to nature or depicts moments of history that take the viewer back in time. He also had a real passion for painting people and portraits.

Over the years, Don made numerous donations toward conservation and community fund-raising efforts. Some include the World Wildlife Fund, Ducks Unlimited, The Nova Scotia Nature Trust, Friends of Nature and Mahone Island Conservation Association. He lent his artistic hand to countless community endeavours, including Bonny Lea Farm, Chester, and the Lunenburg Art Gallery.
