Discover the magic of batik and the wonderful variety and possibilities this resist technique has to offer. This three day workshops designed for all levels to discover a variety of approaches to this traditional Far Eastern technique decorating fabric, using hot liquid wax and fibre-reactive dyes.

Creating Abstraction in Painting

This workshop includes discussion, work time and critiques of your work in class. We will explore where your art is now and where it could be. The format will be exercises for the first hour or two and then you can work on your own pieces or continue with what you started in the morning. The exercises are intended to open up different possibilities within the realm of abstraction.

Marionette Making

In this workshop participants will explore the process of making a nine-string one-hand control rod marionette. Through this four-day class each person will design and create their marionette from scratch.

Mini Clay Workshop

July 15th and 22nd, 9am-12pm.

In this two-day workshop participants will be introduced to the basics of working with clay. As you hand-build your creations, you will learn about the process of clay, different techniques and surface design. A week later, you will come back and learn how to decorate/glaze what you have made!

Plein Air Painting

Plein air painting is a lesson in organizing one’s palette, and absorbing and really seeing the scene before one so as to capture it with an meditative immediacy. This two session workshop will guide one in how to set up and position the easel, and then recognize the variables so as to help the budding artist to focus on what inspires them before capturing the scene with a directness that only painting from nature can result in.

Join acclaimed author/illustrator Emma FitzGerald (Hand Drawn Halifax and Sketch by Sketch Along Nova Scotia's South Shore) for a 3 day immersion in sketching on location in the beautiful town of Chester. Learn her strategies for letting go of negative thoughts when drawing, working quickly using pen and watercolours.

Smart Phone Photography: From Exposure to Archival Print

This one day instructional class will help you develop your camera skills to the fullest using only your smartphone! Learn the basics of portrait shooting, choosing a focal point and creating balance. Embark on a guided walk around Chester and finish the day back at the studio where you will create an 8x10 archival print.
